Spring show is Columbia’s oldest, continuous non-musical performing arts tradition. The outdoor, moving Shakespeare production was the founding show for KCST in 1995, advertising an inclusive cast and crew where everyone who auditioned received a part. This tradition of inclusivity has become one of KCST’s core values, and the annual spring show is a beloved tradition on campus for KCST members and audiences.
Ensemble Rehearsal
As a part of its commitment to casting every person who auditions for spring show, KCST’s spring productions feature an ensemble of actors who meet twice a week to work on the show. These rehearsals might include anything from theatre games to blocking to capture the flag and are an essential part of the camaraderie and vision celebrated by spring show.
MIDNIGHT SHOW
Part of the spring show tradition is to perform one show, typically Friday night, that begins at midnight. Often attracting more festive audiences than the other two performances, these crowds tend to be rowdy. The midnight show offers (1) a unique college experience and (2) an opportunity for the Varsity Show performers and production team to see spring show.
RAIN SHOW
Sometimes it rains! While KCST’s motto is rain or shine, that does not mean we don’t have to take cover when the elements work against us. If the weather is too extreme, we perform under the tents (often up for graduation activities). However, productions also rehearse with rain tracks.
APPAREL
One of spring show’s traditions is the show apparel: track jackets and production team hats. Track jackets, available to all members of the production team and cast, capture the athletic, yet cozy, spirit required of an outdoor, moving production. Production team hats, available to all production team members, are a great way for production team members to quickly spot each other during shows and to signal to the audience who can help with any confusion or problems. Also they’re cool.
